Bodily Expression

MISS ELMA M. EATON

" Is not that education best which gives to the mind and to the body all the forces, all the beauty, and all the perfection of which they are capable?"
-- PLATO

HE course in Bodily Expression consists of daily class exercises in gesture and breathing, beside special work in aesthetic and folk dancing.
The aim is:  First, to improve the standing position and bodily carriage; second, to increase the elasticity in all parts of the body and educate them to correct and finished execution of all movements -- in short, to give the individual control of himself in motion; third, to produce the hygienic effects of vigorous exercise; fourth, the cultivation of complex co-ordination that makes for grace, ease, and rhythm in bodily motion.

The course is carefully chosen, not only to make for health and grace, but also to do away with self-consciousness which so frequently hampers the pupil's work in Expression.

Special exercises to develop poise and ease and grace of manner are given.

Suggestions are constantly made as to why certain exercises are good for certain defects, and as to what we expect to accomplish by them . That is, the science of physical education is treated incidentally during the practice of the art.

Special emphasis is laid on Normal work and that those desirous of teaching the art may be prepared to do so.  A number of the graduates of the school are teaching Physical Training in conjunction with Expression with great success.  Seniors will be given frequent opportunity to direct the class under the supervision and criticism of the director of the department.

The gymnastic dress consists of blouse and bloomers -- blue serge preferred -- and ballet slippers.

Description of the dances taught may be purchased at the school.
