The
course in History of Music comprises a series of
lectures embracing the entire history of the art
and science of music. The primitive
beginnings of musical expression are traced to
their higher stages of evolution. Early
Christian music, the birth of Opera and Oratorio
and their later development. The evolution
of musical instruments and technics. The
growth of musical perception and
composition. The Classic, Romantic and
Modern groups of composers and their contributions
to art. Virtuosi instrumentalists, singers
and conductors.
The chief aim of the work
is to make the study of history live and vital to
the student. Emphasis is placed upon
demonstrative and illustrative work in connection
with each topic of study. Current musical
events are made a feature of each lecture. Research
work, a course of library reading and occasional
themes are required of each student. The
course covers four terms of study, two hour
lessons weekly.
The History of Music
course of lectures is free to all students taking
two lessons per week in any branch of music.
