"Let's have a couple of ice cream cones."

A. Minniear, who drives an ice cream wagon, filled the above order at 10 o'clock last night for one of two men who stopped his wagon on Bales avenue between Fourteenth and Fifteenth streets.

"Now, let's have your cash," the same man demanded as he showed the driver a revolver pointed in his direction. They took $7 in money -- and the cones.

"And they didn't even pay for those cones," Mr. Minniear, who lives at 2561 Cissna avenue, Kansas City, Kas., told the police.

Chimpanzee Mistakes Painted Limb for Real One and Falls.

The Jamaican Jungle training of "Napoleon," a trick vaudeville chimpanzee, nearly proved his undoing last night at the Electric theater in Kansas City, Kas., when he mistook a painted tree on the scenery for the real thing and fell on the stage after making a leap of about ten feet to one of its branches. Before Napoleon was captured seven years ago he lived with his family in the jungle. Leaping from tree to tree was Napoleon's principal occupation.

Perched on the the wood and canvas limb of one of the stage settings, the chimpanzee spied a perch on one of the "trees" on the back drop of the setting. Not trained to look before leaping, Napoleon sprang at the "limb." He crashed against the curtain and fell to the stage on his back.

For a moment he was still. His eyes flashed defiance and his demeanor changed. Clattering across the stage on all fours, he butted his head against the "trunk" of the tree. With his hands he attempted to gain a hold of it. Finally he gave up in despair, chattered disgustedly and walked off the stage. Napoleon's act was finished. He could not be induced to complete his part in the programme.

John Arnold Fights Assistance Until He Ejects Live Amphibian.

John Arnold, 45 years old, swallowed a small frog while drinking from a spring near Twenty-seventh street and Spring avenue, Kansas City, Kas., yesterday. Arnold, who had stopped at teh spring to quench his thirst , was seen running through the streets, tearing madly at his clothing. Neighbors could not control him and the police were summoned.

At the Emergency hospital little could be learned by Dr. G. H. Hobson, a police surgeon, as to the cause of Arnold's misery and suffering. A stomach pump was applied in the belief that he might have tried to commit suicide. Arnold fought desperately until an emetic was given as a last resort.

The result was the ejection of a tiny but lively frog. The whale that swallowed Jonah, and John Arnold, who swallowed a frog, now will occupy rival positions in medical works.

Carpenter Who Created a Scene Arrested on Wife's Complaint.

"Too much religion," said W. E. Askey, 205 South Eight street, Kansas City, Kas., when asked by police Judge Brady yesterday why he couldn't get along with his wife and two daughters, 17 and 20 years old.

I work had as a carpenter," Askey continued, "and when I come home at night I need rest. My family has been attending a revival meeting at Sixth street and Splitlog avenue and instead of letting me rest they surround me on every opportunity and pray. Last night I crawled into the house through a window in the hope I would get to bed and to sleep without being disturbed. When I was discovered in bed by my wife the praying started.

"I got angry and, grabbing a bible I accused all of them of not knowing what 'Pentacost' was. Then they called the police and had me arrested for disturbing the peace."

Askey also testified his wife and daughters often remained at the tabernacle until midnight.

"I'll discharge the defendant," said Judge Brady, "and advise the women to pray harder for him but to pray silently and in another room."

Missouri Officials Arrest Holdup Suspect at State Line.

An offer of freedom on his own recognizance was refused by John Lazia in Kansas City, Kas., yesterday, where he was being held on a charge of safe-blowing. Lazia said he found the jail quite comfortable, the meals noursihing and the company pleasant. Please go away and let him alone!

Whereupon Prosecutor Meek became indignant, informed Lazia he could stay in jail no longer, and ordered him deported from Kansas City, Kas. The charge of safe-blowing was dismissed int he Wyandotte county district court and Lazia, protesting vehemently, was loaded into an automobile.

The car, in charge of police officials, started to the Missouri side of the line over the Intercity viaduct. As it neared the last toll station two men stepped into the middle of the roadway, holding up their hands.

Officers Meet Him.

"Have you got Lazia? Let us have him," they said to the motor car's driver. The protesting passenger was then given into the custody of T. J. Curtain, assistant prosecutor of Jackson county, and a deputy marshal. Immediately he was hauled before Judge Latshaw in the criminal court, where, with Tom Bosco, he is chargeed with holding up the saloon of Herman Allman, 2513 East Fifteenth street.

"But you can't hold me," sputtered Lazia. "I'm out on $5,000 bond on this charge."

"The bond was forfeited when you failed to appear to day at the time set for trial," he was informed.

"I couldn't come because I was in jail in Kansas City, Kas.," explained Lazia.  He was committed to jail in default of bond. It is believed that likely Judge Latshaw will later set aside the forfeiture.

Lazia is said by the police to be a member of the gang of "Black Mike." He was arrested as a safe-blower in Kansas City, Kas., on finger print evidence, being the third man in the United States to be arrested on such a clew with no corroborating testimony.

WOMAN DECAPITATED BY COUNTRY CLUB CAR.

Mrs. Caroline Wahlenmaier, Wealthy Widow, Meets Instant Death.

Mrs. Caroline Wahlenmaier, 65 years old, widow of J. W. Wahlenmaier, a wealthy pioneer citizen of Kansas City, was struck and killed by a northbound Country Club car at 5 o'clock yesterday evening at Firty-first and McGee streets. The head was severed from the body and death was instantaneous.

Mrs. Wahlenmaier made her home with her son, A. G. Wahlenmaier, an automobile dealer, at 5110 Main street. She had been to a neighborhood grocery store and was on her way home with some purchases. The care was slowing down to take on passengers, and did not move more than six feet after it struck her. Witnesses told Patrolman B. D. Crowley that the woman seemed absent-minded, and either did not notice the car or thought that she could cross ahead of it. They declared that they did not believe the motorman was to blame.

The motorman, L. R. Marshall, 4530 Virginia avenue, and the conductor, V. T. Todd, 4836 Charlotte street, were arrested and taken to police headquarters. They were held until two of the sons of the dead woman appeared and asked that they be released, declaring that they believed the accident to be unavoidable, and due to the failing faculties of their mother. The two men were released under orders to appear and make statements today at the prosecutor's office.

Mrs. Wahlenmaier was the owner of the Wahlenmaier building, the finest office building in Kansas City, Kas., and many other properties in both Kansas Citys. She is survived by three sons: A. G., with whom she made her home, W. F. of Seattle, Wash., and F. C. Wahlenmaier, an oculist living at the Densmore hotel, and a daughter, Mrs. L. F. Barney, wife of Dr. L. F. Barney, living at the Hotel Grand in Kansas City, Kas.
Both Mrs. Wahlenmaier and her husband were born in Germany and came to the United States with their parents when they were children. She would have been 66 years old today. The parents of both settled in Kansas City, Kas. Mrs. Wahlenmaier lived for forty-seven years at her hold home at 436 Washington boulevard, Kansas City, Kas. Her husband was a pioneer lumber dealer and for many years conducted a lumber yard at what is now Fourth street and Washington boulevard. He was prominent in civic affairs and became an extensive property holder. When he bought the land on which the Wahlemaier building now stands at Eight street and Minnesota avenue, it was covered with underbrush. He died thirty-one years ago. Mrs. Wahlenmamier recently went to live at the home of her son, near where she was killed. She had one sister, Mrs. Catherine Brune, who lives at Lakeview, Kas.

KANSANS PLANNED TO LYNCH A NEGRO

Mob Arranged Midnight Attack on Argentine Police Station.

QUICK ACTION IS TAKEN.

Man Accused of Assaulting White Woman Is Spirited Away.

A threatened jail delivery and lynching of a negro prisoner, to have taken place at the signal of the midnight Armour whistle last night, was thwarted by Thomas Fleming, chief of detectives of Kansas City, Kas., when a friend notified him of the plans of the mob being organized to raid the jail. Fleming hurriedly sent a police motor car with seven officers to the No. 4 police station jail in Argentine and spirited the prisoner away to the police headquarters in the city hall, Sixth street and Ann avenue, Kansas City, Kas.

All day yesterday, it is said, a mob was being quietly formed among the friends and neighbors of Mrs. May Gunn, 1256 Metropolitan avenue, Argentine, who was attacked by a negro in her home the night of April 8. The mob was pledged to avenge the outrage by lynching the negro whom she had identified as her assailant. The band of vengeance numbered 150 men.

Crowd Is Dispersed.
Until 11 o'clock last night Chief Fleming had heard nothing of the plans. Then a telephone call came and the police car arrived fifteen minutes later at the Argentine station.

The officers dispersed the early gatherers and put a guard around the jail while a driver and two officers whirled the prisoner away to a stronger jail. The rescue of the prisoner occurred barely three quarters of an ho ur before the midnight whistle that was to have been the signal for the lynching.

The prisoner is Louis Bush, a negro. He was arrested a few days after Mrs. Gunn was criminally assaulted in her home by a negro. After Bush's arrest Mrs. Gunn visited the jail and identified him as her assailant.

Fainted When Prisoner Spoke
Mrs. Gunn is 22 years old. Her husband is employed in the railway yards and it was while he was at work that a negro entered the house. Mrs. Gunn screamed and then fainted. When she regained consciousness her assailant was gone. When Mrs. Gunn visited the jail she again fainted when Louis Bush, the prisoner, spoke.

A guard was placed in the Kansas City, Kas., police headquarters last night for fear the attempted lynching which had been thwarted in Argentine would be attempted at the stronger building.

Explosion of Dynamite Cap Awakens Woman, Who Opens Window.

The explosion of a dynamite cap placed on the combination head of a safe in the office of the George W. Miller Commission Company, 509 North Sixth street, Kansas City, Kas., at 5 o'clock yesterday morning awakened Miss A. Pickerell, who resides across the street. Donning a dressing gown she opened her bedroom window. The noise attracted the attention of three young men in the commission firm's office, who escaped. Miss Pickerell notified the police at headquarters three blocks away.

A pane of glass in the front door of the office was broken in gaining entrance. Finger prints on the bits of broken glass form the only clue the police have to the safe crackers. Chief of Detectives Thomas Fleming said yesterday the job was that of novices. A heavy sledge hammer and several chisels were found lying on the office floor. The safe was not wrecked. It contained about $300, mostly in checks, Mr. Miller said.

FIREMAN TUMBLES INTO ACID TANK.

Big Crowd Watches Spectacular Blaze at K. C. Refining Plant.

A blaze which the firemen could not fight with water did $50,000 damage to the blank of the Kansas City Refining Company at Second street and Garfield avenue, Kansas City, Kas., last night.

A leak in a pipe leading from the crude oil tank to the refining still is believed to to have been the cause. Nearby are boilers, and a spark from beneath one of them is thought to have set afire the leaking oil.

The flames quickly shot up until the entire sky was illuminated, the light being visible for miles. Attracted by the spectacular features, a crowd quickly gathered and the police were busy keeping the spectators in zones of safety.

The blaze begun by the spark ran along the pipe into the large brick still, which was partly filled, and then through other pipes to six tanks of 500 barrels capacity and two tanks of 1,500 barrels capacity each.

E. W. Goebel, the manager, was unable to make an estimate of how much oil was in the tanks and the still, but declared all were partly filled.

All of the fire departments were called, but Chief McNarrey wasted no effort in an attempt to extinguish the blazing oil. He set his men to playing streams of water upon a large gas tank which is a part of the plant and also drenching the office building of the company.

Both were saved, in spite of the fact that the wind was blowing the flames from teh tanks far out and sparks were flying.

Tom Gibson, a fireman of No. 2 company, was undressed by an acid bath. He fell into a barrel of "gludge" acid, used in refining the oil, and when he was able to scramble out his uniform and shoes were eaten away. he was still dressed in his underwear and socks, however, and was not burned severely except about the hands. he was taken to his home.

Most of the damage to the plant was covered by insurance, Mr. Goebel said. New tanks recently were erected, a brick still built and other improvements made.

Frank Brown, Independence, Kas., operator, at about the same time became a heavy stockholder in the corporation, which is capitalized for $100,000.

PREACHER STRICKEN IN HIS PULPIT; DIES.

The Rev. C. W. Litchfield of Epworth M. E. Church Is Apoplexy victim.

In the midst of his sermon last night, the Rev. C. W. Litchfield of the Epworth M. E. church, South, Forty-fifth and Genessee streets, fell in his pulpit. A few moments later he died from the attack of apoplexy. His congregation, although aware of illness which kept him from the pulpit last Sunday, was unwarned and much excitement followed his sudden death in the pulpit which he as occupied for the last few years.

Dr. J. H. Ralston and Dr. A. E. Eubank, called immediately to the church, pronounced the attack apoplexy. This was further substantiated when Coroner Harry Czarlinsky was called. The body was sent to the Stine & McClure undertaking rooms.

The minister was 70 years old. He had been a resident of the two Kansas Citys for many years. Seven years ago he came to the Epworth church from Rosedale, where he had been pastor of the Walnut Street M. E. church for four years. Previously he was pastor of churches in Kansas City, Mo., and for a time at Bethel, Kas.

Mr. Litchfield had been ill more than a week and was unable to fill his pulpit last Sunday. He improved in condition last week, however, and believed he practically had recovered.

Mr. Litchfield was born in Suffolk county, Virginia, on March 7, 1847. He was a veteran of the Civil war. After the war he moved to Washington, D. C., and later came to Kansas City, Kas., living there until about ten years ago.

He is survived by his wife, three daughters and two sons. Two daughters, Misses Ethel and Frances Litchfield, are teachers in the Kansas City, Kas., schools. Another is the wife of Dr. James Y. Simpson of Kansas City, Mo. The sons are William Litchfield, a member of the fire department of Kansas City, and Harry Litchfield. The family home is at 3602 Troost.

SHOT IN HEART IN ROOM WITH FIANCEE.

Dr. Herman E. Vohs of K.C.K., Dies Without Making Statement.

MYSTERY IN TRAGEDY.

Bullet From Gun Belonging to Girl; Believed to Be Accident.

DR. HERMAN E. VOHS.

Under circumstances which have not been fully explained, Dr. Herman E. Vohs, 28 years old, an instructor at the Kansas City College of Medicine and Surgery, Twenty-third and Holmes streets, was shot through the heart yesterday afternoon in a bedroom adjoining his office, 413 North Sixth street, Kansas City, Kas., in the presence of Miss Volle Pottorff, to whom he was engaged to be married. Despite the nature of the wound he lived until midnight, when he died at St. Margaret's hospital, where he was taken immediately after the shooting.

Dr. Vohs regained consciousness shortly before he died and tried to make a statement. He was too weak, however, to speak and lapsed again into unconsciousness which ended in death.

While the shooting is believed to have been accidental, the exact circumstance, the police say, have not been cleared up. The bullet was fired from a .25-caliber automatic pistol belonging to Miss Pottorff. Dr. H. E. Hobson, a police surgeon, who examined the wound, declared the bullet entered the chest from the left side and ranged downward. Dr. Vohs's own revolver was in a drawer in the office desk. Miss Pottorff said she had given the pistol to Dr. Vohs on Saturday night for him to clean. No one else was in the apartments at the time and Miss Pottorff was the only witness. She was held several hours by the police, then was allowed to go to her home in the care of the police matron.

Dr. Vohs met Miss Pottorff professionally last December. She is 29 years old and is employed by the Visiting Nurse Association of Kansas City, Kas. The two became engaged withnin a onth and were to have been married after Lent. Both were held in the highest regard by their friends. Dr. Vohs was a sergeant in ambulance company No. 1, Missouri national guard.

WAITING FOR FRIENDS

The couple attended services together yesterday morning at St. Anthony's Catholic church and later ate dinner together at Dr. Voh's boarding place, 500 North seventh street. Then they went to the doctor's office to await the arrival of anohter couple, with whom they intended to go for an outing.

Miss Pottorff said Dr. Vohs went into his bedroom adjoining the office and removed his coat and vest. She also said she removed her own coat and hat and they were seated on the edge of the bed.

"I did not see where he got the pistol from," Miss Pottorff told Chief of Detectives Thomas Fleming. "he did not brandish the gun around and the first thing I knew I was startled by the report of a shot. He staggered to his feet. I said, 'Oh dearie, I believe you're shot." He said, 'I believe I am.' I ran out of the room to go for help. I was so frightened I could not think of the telephone numbers of any physicians, so I ran to the drug store across the street. Then a couple of men came in and helpted take care of him.

The two men were C. T. Burnett, a druggist, Sixth street and Elizabeth avenue, and Joseph Stewart, his clerk. They told the police they found the doctor lying on the bed with his feet protruding through the ironwork at the foot, almost to the floor. He was unconscious, they said, and writhing in pain. The pistol was lying on the floor at the side of the bed. Dr. Vohs was taken to St. Margaret's hospital. On account of the nature of the wound it was believed that an attempt to probe would cause immediate death.

SCOUTS SUICIDE IDEA.

Miss Pottorff was taken to police headquarters by Patrolmen George Chess and John Mogle. She wept over the injury to her fiance, but gave her version of the shooting to Chief Fleming with the utmost frankness. She told the police that she had never quarreled with Dr. Vohs and that "her love was not of the sentimental type." She also declared that the idea of suicide on his part was preposterous. She said he was of a cheerful disposition and had no cause to be moody.

The point which puzzles the police is the angle at which the bullet entered Dr. Vohs's body. Late lst night Chief Fleming announced he believed the shooting had been accidental. He said he believed the movable barrel of the pistol had jammed and the doctor had held it high across his chest to release it. Chief Fleming said he believed Dr. Vohs did not understand the mechanism of an automatic pistol and had fallen a victim through ignorance.

Miss Pottorff was graduated from the Bethany Nurse's Training school, Kansas City, Kas., in 1913. She has been employed by the visiting Nurse Association since November and officials of that organization said last night she was one of the most efficient workers. Her parents reside at Louisburg, Kas. Dr. Voh's parents reside at Paola, Kas., and he has been a resident of Kansas City for eight years.

Coroner J. A. Davis ordered the body of Vohs sent to the Fairweather undertaking establishment, where a post mortem examination will be held today.

Mrs. Clara Aldrich, totally blind and a stranger in Kansas City, arrived at the Union depot last night from Joliet, Ill. She was expecting friends to meet her at the station, but was disappointed. She told Mrs. Ollie Everingham, matron at the depot, that Mrs. O. P. Blatchley of 220 South Ash street, in Kansas City, Kas., had promised to meet her. The matron called the Blatchley home over the telephone and found that Mrs. Blatchley had fallen on the ice near her home yesterday morning and received injuries which confined her to bed. The matron sent Mrs. Aldrich to the Young Women's Christian Association boarding house for the night.

Dr. O. P. Blatchley said last night that his wife's parents were friends of the parents of Mrs. Aldrich, and that she had arranged to locate her in Kansas City, Kas. Dr. Blatchley said that Mrs. Aldrich for many years has been engaged in writing religious literature for students in the blind schools over the country.

Mrs. Blatchley suffered a dislocated left shoulder and a ruptured artery over her left eye in her fall yesterday.
