Thomas Adams Witten was born in Beckly, West Virginia,
July 4, 1858, but is practically a Missourian as his parents removed
to this State when he was eight years of age. His boyhood days
were spent in Trenton, and his early education was received in the
public schools of that town.
After the public schools, Mr. Witten entered
the Grand River College at Edinburgh, Mo., from which institution he
was graduated in 1879. After graduation he went back to
Guyandotte, W. Va., where he studied law in the office of his uncle,
Judge Evermont Ward, and was admitted to the bar in 1881. He
first commenced practice in Trenton, but in 1887 came to Kansas City,
where he has ever since remained. For some years he was alone,
but in 1893 formed the firm of Witten & Hughes, which continued
until 1902, the occasion of dissolution being Mr. Hughes's candidacy
for office.
Mr. Witten is a member of the local Bar
Association, and has always occupied a prominent place in the public
life of the city.
He married Miss Carrie Bailey in 1888 in
Delevan, Ill., and they had two children, Francis Donald and Hazel C.
B. His wife died in 1892, and in October 1901, he married Miss
Belle G. Steele, of Marshall Mo.
