Louis Augustine Laughlin was born September 11, 1857,
at Medina, Ohio. After six years in Putnam County, Illinois, he
went to Racine, Wis., one year, and moved to Normal ill., in 1866,
where he attended the State University. He was graduated from
the Princeton High School in 1877, and for a few years was a telegraph
operator and station agent. He was graduated from the Princeton

station agent. He was graduated from the Columbia Law School in
New York in 1882, President Roosevelt being his classmate. He
was admitted to the bar in Saginaw, Mich., in August 1882, and
practiced there five years, coming to Kansas City in 1887.
Webster Davis became his law partner in 1893. In 1895 Mr.
Laughlin became Assistant Counselor under Judge McDougal. He was
again appointed to the office in January 1, 1901.
Mr. Laughlin was married to Emma A. Kendall
at Lamville, Ill., February 10, 1887. They have one child,
Kendall, twelve years old.
