Herbert Spencer Hadley was born in Olathe, Kansas,
February 20, 1872. After attending the public schools he entered
the Kansas University in 1887, and was graduated from there in
1898. He then attended the Northwestern Law School in Chicago,
and took his degree in 1894. He came to Kansas City in the same
year, and was admitted to practice here.
Mr. Hadley took an active interest in local
politics from the commencement of his residence, and in 1898 was
appointed Assistant City Counselor. In January, 1901, he
resigned in order to make the race for Prosecuting Attorney, and was
elected by a handsome majority, being the first Republican to fill
that office for a quarter of a century.
Mr. Hadley gave promise of oratorical ability
in his school days. He won first prize for Kansas University in
the State oratorical contest in 1891, and in 1894, while attending Northwestern,
repeated the performance.
Mr. Hadley wedded Miss Agnes Lee October 8,
1901, and they have a daughter.

| UPDATE:
In 1908, at the age of 36, Herbert Spencer Hadley was elected Governor
of Missouri, serving until 1913. He later went on to become a
professor of law at the University of Colorado, and in 1923
became Chancellor of Washington University, serving until his death in
1927.
