The
fundamental idea of the Social Settlement is to help people to
help themselves. Settlement activities, therefore, must
touch the lives of the people of the neighborhood at as many
points as possible, for in this way an appeal is made to the
greatest number of individuals.
Aside from the encouragement, cheer and help afforded the
individual, the Settlement is a permanent and vital factor in
social reform. The Social Settlement is not itself a direct
agency of reform except in individual cases by the fact that it
comes into direct contact with the most serious social and civic
problems, that it throws light into dark places, that it affords a
practical means of testing methods of reform, makes the Social
Settlement an institution of great value and far reaching effect
for good. |
